Sony’s Venom movie announcement isn’t complete news. Sony has had plans for a Venom solo film for years. Venom was used as a character in the poorly reviewed “Spider-Man 3,” the worst film of the trilogy.
Venom is an essential character to the Spider-Man world, having pestered Spider-Man and having spawned more gruesome Spider-Man villains, like Carnage. The Venom symbiote has gone on to attach itself to different hosts, changing from hero to villain as it does. Veteran Spider-Man fans most look forward to seeing the time when the Venom costume was worn by Spider-Man himself, resulting in his unique, sleek, black costume look.
Sony’s Venom movie will arrive on Oct. 5, 2018. Nothing has been mentioned about Marvel Studios participation in the project. The deal between Marvel and Sony means that this could be an effort primarily led by Sony, having little Marvel involvement.
It’s been reported that this will be a standalone movie, kind of a surprising movie since it could potentially have tied into this summer ‘s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” perhaps acting as a kind of sequel.
Sony’s announcement of the film’s confirm date followed an announcement by Warner Bros. to move “Aquaman” from Oct. 5 to Dec. 21, 2018. And the reason for all these shifts and changes is to avoid too much competition from “Avatar 2,” since it was announced that that film had met delays.
Since Spider-Man is joining the Avengers, a Venom movie, unless Venom is joining “Infinity War,” would have to be a standalone effort, unless Spider-Man himself wore the symbiote costume the way he did in the original “Secret Wars” comics.
A Venom movie could deal with the symbiote issue in a number of ways. It could be used to introduce characters like Carnage and other character too dark for the younger direction the Tom Holland Spider-Man is taking.
Venom could also become a hero in movies, as he has sometimes been in the comics. His most heroic persona has been as Agent Venom. The new movie may not immediately jump into this phase of Venom’s history. It may take on more of the R-rated tones that some recent superhero movies have seen major success with.
Besides Venom, Sony also had plans to make a Sinister Six movie. Now that they are bringing their Venom plans to fruition—an entire group villain effort may not be far behind. The membership of the Sinister Six has varied over the years, but it is usually a team at least consisting of Spider-Man’s other prime nemesis, Doctor Octopus.
Sony’s Venom movie, with its 2018 release date now in full view, is set to capitalize on and expand the connection it will have to the growing audience for the third recent movie incarnation of Spider-Man.
