Tillerson visits Korean demilitarized zone

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the heavily fortified border between North and South Korea on Friday (March 17).

Tillerson arrived in South Korea earlier in the day on the second leg of an Asian tour focused on finding a new approach for North Korea after what he described as two decades of failed efforts to denuclearize the reclusive state.

He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who is also acting president and hold a joint news conference with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se later on Friday. The news conference will be followed by a meeting with Yun.

Tillerson, a former oil executive with no prior diplomatic experience, began his first Asian visit as secretary of state in Japan on Wednesday (March 15) and will travel to China on Saturday (March 18).
