No more wasting toilet paper.
Beijing parks are putting in automatic toilet paper dispensers that use facial recognition technology.
It rolls out about 27 inches of paper for each person. The same person has to wait nine minutes for another round.
The dispenser can tell when it’s a new person.
It’s already in use in public restrooms in Temple of Heaven Park.
“This machine was actually designed in order to stop people from wasting toilet paper. If the paper was put in an uncontrolled device, then people will waste it endlessly,” said Lei Zhenshan, designer and sales executive of the toilet paper dispenser from Shoulian Technology Company in Tianjin.
The park’s toilet cleaner said the new machine works. The restroom now uses 4 rolls instead of 14 per day.
Some visitors like it, saying it reduces waste and is convenient to use. Others said it takes too much time.
“For most people, it is a bit slow if they need the toilet urgently. But if you think about this from another angle, and put yourself in other’s places, this is pretty useful, I think it is not bad,” said Yu Baoyuan, a 71-year-old Beijing resident.
“This will save paper and stop wastage. It’s convenient because I don’t need to pull it out,” said 57-year-old tourist Zhu Guomin.
