Audi shows all-electric concept car

Audi revealed its vision of the future at a media day ahead of the Shanghai auto show on April 18.

Audi introduced its all-electric e-tron Sportback concept car, the first of a planned five-car electric line to be produced in a joint venture with China’s FAW Group.

Audi management board member Dietmar Voggenreiter said the concept car was really close to the production version. He said the car would first be produced in Europe, and either imported or also built in China.

Audi and FAW plan to start with plug-in hybrids and develop into fully electric, battery-powered cars. The first of the line, a plug-in hybrid Audi A6L, goes on sale later this year.

“There is first of all a worldwide customer trend for sustainability, and the customers are asking for CO2-optimized mobility solutions,” Voggenreiter said.

“Well, there is first of all a worldwide customer trend for sustainability, and the customers are asking for CO2-optimized mobility solutions. And one puzzle piece of this strategy are the e-tron cars in a transition phase; first the plug-in hybrid cars, and later on in the long-run, we will see more and more shares of the fully battery vehicle cars,” he said.

With established market presence in Europe, North America, and China, Audi is well placed to push its electric line all around the world.
