Vice President Pence says US “100 percent” with Japan against North Korea

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence discussed North Korea with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on April 18.

Vice President Pence told Abe that the United States stood firm with Japan against what he called “provocation from across the Sea of Japan.”

“As the president himself would say if he was here,” Pence said, “Let me be clear to you, Mr. Prime Minister, and to all the people of Japan: we are with you 100 percent.”

Abe said he sought a peaceful solution, but that words alone would not bring that about.

“Of course we should seek a peaceful settlement of the issue,” he said, “although I think dialogue for the sake of dialogue is meaningless. It is necessary for us to exercise pressure against North Korea to engage in serious dialogue.”

Japan is the second stop Pence made on a 10-day tour of Asia.
