Vice President Pence reassures Japan on trade deals

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence met with a group of 50 of Japan’s most important business leaders on April 19, to reassure them that the United States wanted to strengthen economic ties with the island nation.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States seeks a stronger and more balanced bilateral trade relationship with Japan,” he said.

“Our goal is simple: We seek trade that is both free and fair, and benefits both our nations equally,” Pence said.

Japanese business leaders were upset when President Trump abandoned the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP,) a free trade pact involving 12 Asian nations.

The TTP was supported by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as well as former President Barack Obama.

“The president and I are confident that we can find new ways to expand our economic ties with Japan in different sectors and different industries,” Pence continued.

The vice president went on to speak about Trump’s plan to cut corporate taxes, which he claimed were 10 percent higher in the United States than in Japan.

Pence concluded by saying that the tax cuts would benefit all of the assembled business leaders.
