Defense Secretary Mattis says strategy matters

Defense Secretary James Mattis told reporters that he takes into account the strategic effects of all military actions.

Mattis was answering questions about actions taken in Afghanistan.

While Mattis did not name the people of whom he was speaking, he made it clear that he trusted completely the people to whom he did delegate authority and was satisfied with their actions.

“When you are in a conflict situation you have got to leave initiative in the hands, delegate initiative to those that you consider competent,” Mattis said.

“In Afghanistan, they have been engaged in that fight up in that corner against ISIS elements up there for some time. I was kept informed sometimes on a daily basis of how the fight was going and what the options were,” he said.

Some people seem to think the 21,000-pound GBU-43 bomb was dropped to retaliate for an attack that killed a U.S. soldier.

The death was the first of a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan in 2017.

The commander who made the decision to drop the bomb, Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, said, “This was the right weapon against the right target.”
