Beijing dust blanket lifted by strong winds

A dense dust storm that choked Beijing residents has been blown away by powerful winds after 36 hours.

“I see that the air is a lot cleaner now. In the morning, if you don’t wear a face mask when breathing, you’ll have an entire mouthful of dirt,” said Beijing office worker Sun Haiyan.

“If you speak then you’ll have a mouthful of sand, that’s for sure. It feels as if I’m constantly trying to brush off an entire layer of dust out of my ears that I have accumulated,” Sun said.

Beijing was buried in airborne dirt for 36 hours. One resident said it was the worst dust storm in 10 years.

Air quality measurements showed dust-sized particles at 20 times the suggested safe concentration.

Beijing is choked by dust each spring, when winds crossing the Gobi Desert collect sand and dump it in the city.
