Researchers spot rare Antarctic ‘dragon-skin’ ice formations

This  rare ice formation is called “dragon skin.”

Dragon-skin is formed when wind lifts the surface ice in sections. The exposed water underneath freezes, creating this scale-like texture.

Scientist Dr. Guy Williams captured these images on an Antarctic expedition.

It was the first time this type of ice had been seen since 2007.
