Actors from Hollywood and France arrive on Cannes red carpet

Top actors and actresses arrived for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival. The opening night movie is French film “Ismael’s Ghosts.”

The next 11 nights feature panels, screenings, and competition for the coveted prize of the Cannes Palme d’Or trophy. Because this is the 70th year of the festival, the trophy is elegant and embedded with diamonds. Nineteen films are up for competition this year.

The festival has already opened itself to controversy, because there are Netflix-only releases up for potential awards. Festival organizers have already relented by not allowing streaming service-only releases next year.

The festival ends on May 28.
