President Trump welcomes President Santos of Colombia

President Trump welcomed his Colombian counterpart, Juan Manuel Santos, to the White House on May 18.

President Santos seeks U.S. support for the shaky peace deal with the FARC rebels. The rebels signed a peace accord after five decades of fighting, but not all the guerrillas have turned in their arms. Colombian voters are split almost evenly in support of the plan.

President Trump hopes Santos can reason with Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro.

Venezuela has been torn by weeks of violent protest against Maduro. Maduro had blocked local elections, tried to shut down Congress, and has announced he will form a handpicked People’s Assembly, which will rewrite the constitution.

Meanwhile, this once oil-rich nation is running out of food and medicine.
