Trump says appointment of special counsel for Russian investigation ‘divides the country’

President Donald Trump said the appointment of a special counsel to investigate his campaign’s alleged ties to Russia “divides the country.”

He was speaking in a joint news conference with the Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos in Washington, D.C., on May 18.

“Well, I respect the move but the entire thing has been a witch hunt and there is no collusion between, certainly, myself and my campaign and I can always speak for myself and the Russians—zero,” said Trump.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller had been appointed to lead the investigation after FBI Director James Comey was fired.

The president said he wants to focus on fulfilling his promises to boost jobs, strengthen border security, and defeat ISIS.

“We’ve made tremendous progress in the last 100 and some odd days—tremendous progress,” said Trump.

“I’m very proud of it. That’s what I want to be focused on, because, believe me, there’s no collusion. Russia is fine. But whether it’s Russia or anybody else, my total priority, believe me is the United States of America,” he added.
