World’s heaviest man recovering from bypass surgery

At 1,311 pounds, Juan Pedro Franco was the heaviest man in the world—and he was not happy about it.

The 33-year-old was bedridden for seven years.

He finally got biliopancreatic bypass surgery.

He is returning home just over a week after his operation. Doctors are pleased with his recovery.

“I can tell you he has recovered adequately and satisfactorily. We thought the recovery would be more complex, but it has been very, very good,” said surgeon Jose Antonio Castaneda.

Franco’s life is still at risk due to his obesity. His organs could simply give up and shut down at any time.

Franco is unfazed. He has been living with the risk of death for a decade. Now he also has a glimmer of hope.

“The doctors have said I am doing well, they have told me up to now there have not been any complications, we have not had any setbacks,“ Franco said.

“At the moment I am on a strict diet they have set, but hey, let’s do it,” he said.
