Queen Elizabeth and Prince William visits shelter near London high-rise fire

Queen Elizabeth and Prince William on June 16 visited residents affected by a deadly London apartment building fire, as well as fire volunteers and emergency services.

The British royals made their way to Westway Sports Center near the site of the fire, which has been turned into a relief center.

“It’s come over very strongly how good the community has been to help,” the queen said.

The blaze on Wednesday morning engulfed the high-rise Grenfell Tower block and killed at least 30 people.

“That’s one of the most terrible things I have ever seen,” Prince William told a volunteer.

He promised to address the residents’ concerns.

As the royals were leaving the center, they were met with cheers but also desperate cries for help from a crowd of about 40 people.

London authorities fear that the death toll will continue to rise beyond 30. However, searching the building and identifying victims could take months. Some victims may never be identified.
