Texas Pizza Hut Delivers 120 Pizzas by Kayak

Pizza Hut manager switched to kayak delivery to feed residents of a Houston suburb flooded by Tropical Storm Harvey.

Shayda Habib runs a Pizza Hut restaurant in Sugar Land, a suburb on the western outskirt of Houston. One of her shift managers told her there are hungry people running out of food in the nearby neighborhood of Village of Oak Lake.

She called her husband, who managed to arrange several kayaks for her to use. With a limited crew, she prepared pizzas and loaded them on the boats for an unusual delivery on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

“We packed 120 pizzas into kayaks and took them out to people in their homes,” Habib told WMTV. “The people in the houses didn’t expect us to come. It was so nice to see their smiles after so much gloom.”

She said she was planning to deliver more pizzas on Wednesday and Thursday and continue until she runs out of stock.

Many restaurants in the Houston area have been helping feed the residents and first responders after Harvey dropped record-setting 50 inches of rain over the past week, flooding large swaths of the city and its surroundings.

Other business owners are helping too. One furniture seller turned two of his Houston-area showrooms into shelters, giving a bed to crash on to displaced residents and even National Guard troops in need of rest in between their rescue work. The area restaurants helped the store owner feed the sheltered crowd.
