South Carolina Sen. Paul Campbell isn’t above the law.
Campbell, 71, was arrested on DUI charges and struggled to stand when police officers put handcuffs on him, The Post and Courier reported. His vehicle crashed into 21-year-old Michaela Caddin’s car on Interstate 26, prompting police to respond to the scene.
Campbell was found in the passenger’s seat of his car. His wife, Vicki Campbell, was behind the wheel of the car, officials said.
Caddin alleged that the state senator switched seats with his wife after the accident. Police asked him to get out of the car, and they noticed he was under the influence.
When he was asked during a sobriety test, Campbell said that he’s diabetic and “one of his legs is shorter than the other,” which is why he can’t walk a straight line, reported the New York Daily News.
He was later arrested for driving under the influence after officers determined his blood alcohol content.
“This may cost me my job. You know that, I guess,” he told officers in the video. “This is not fun. This kinda sucks. I’m going to change the law on this … I’m not DUI. I wasn’t driving the car anyway,” he said.
The Post and Courier reported that Campbell said that he was not driving, although Caddin disputes that.
He’s slated to appear in court on Jan. 8.
