‘Rising’ Local Basketball Gunned Down in Miami

By Jack Phillips

A rising local basketball star was shot and killed in Miami on Sunday night, Nov. 12, the Miami Herald said.

Malcolm Nicholas III, 18, who had attended Miami Senior High and Mater Academy Charter, was walking in Overtown at 7 p.m. when shots were fired, hitting him.

The details surrounding Nicholas’s shooting are unknown, NBC Miami reported.

Nicholas went out of Florida to the Believe Academy postgraduate basketball program in Tennessee, and he was set to transfer to a bigger school to play.

“Our thoughts and prayers to the family/friends of Malcolm Nicholas,” Believe Academy wrote on Twitter. “Our hearts go out to you. You will truly be missed!”

He had offers from colleges, including Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Eastern Michigan, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

“RIP Malcolm Nicholas, former Mater Academy SG shot this weekend. He was lined up with D1 offers. Massive potential, all gone because of senseless gun violence,” local blogger Joel Franco tweeted.

“With a heavy heart we lose a beautiful soul & gain an angel. Our condolences go out to your family, Malcolm. May you Rest In Peace. If anyone has any information, we urge you to please contact” local authorities, Miami Senior High tweeted.

His former coach, Marcos “Shakey” Rodriguez, said that he was an “absolute joy to coach,” the Herald reported. “He was a leader and great human being. It’s a huge loss to our community and for everybody,” Rodriguez said.

Tyson Waterman, the founder and head coach at Believe Prep, told the paper,“This kid had a very bright future in basketball. He had the ‘it factor.’”

There are no suspects in the case.

“We’re just heavily relying on the public to come forward with any information that may be a break in the case,” said Miami police spokesman Christopher Bess.
