UK Man Convicted in Child’s Death Found Dead in Cell, Inmate Charged

A British man who was convicted of murder in the death of his baby daughter was allegedly killed in his jail cell, the BBC reported.

Liam Deane, 22, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was found dead in his cell at HMP Leeds on Sunday.

Fellow inmate John Westland, 28, was charged with Deane’s murder, appearing in front of the Leeds Magistrates’ Court. He’s slated to appear at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday, Nov. 16, the broadcaster reported.

Deane was imprisoned last month for the murder of his daughter, Luna, in July. He had shaken the 2-day-old infant because she “would not stop crying,” according to The Mirror.

Luna later died in the hospital after suffering brain injuries.

Later, he admitted to the crime in a police interview.

“In my submission, there is simply no explanation for the defendant’s behavior,” his lawyer, Richard Wright, was quoted as saying. “His actions were wholly and utterly out of character for him. The defendant will have a very long time to reflect upon his terrible behavior.”

Detective Superintendent Jim Dunkerley, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said it was a “tragic case.”

“Luna suffered an assault at the hands of one of the people who was responsible for her care and wellbeing. Her family has been torn apart by her death,” he said. “Deane will now face life in prison as a result of his abhorrent actions and I hope the family can find some comfort in this verdict.”

“He said he was responsible for all of the injuries that she had suffered and he said that Luna had not settled down and he lost control,” added Michael Smith, the prosecutor during Deane’s trial, according to The Sun.
