John Mayer Doing Well After Surgery But Florida Shows Postponed

By Chris Jasurek

Platinum-selling musician John Mayer, who currently plays with the band, Dead and Company, is recovering from an emergency appendectomy and is doing well, according to a tweet on the band’s account.

“John Mayer is recovering from the emergency appendectomy he underwent yesterday and is in good spirits,” his bandmates tweeted.

On Dec. 5, Mayer was rushed to a New Orleans hospital for emergency surgery.

He was scheduled to play with Dead and Company that night but the show had to be postponed, as were his next two shows in Florida.

Another tweet from the band assured ticket-holders that they will still get to see a show if they choose to wait for a rescheduled date.

Playing in the Band

The 40-year-old guitarist and vocalist was joined by three members of The Grateful Dead—Bob Weir on guitar and vocals; Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann playing drums and percussion; ex-Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge; and keyboard player Jeff Chimenti.

The group called itself Dead and Company, and devoted itself to preserving the music and the spirit of The Grateful Dead, who dissolved after the death of lead guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia in 1995.

The Grateful Dead played improvisational rock and folk music, both electric and acoustic, for more than 30 years. The band was well known for its excesses, but also for its spirit of peace and unity that pervaded its audiences during concerts.

Dead and Company first started touring in 2015, and its annual tours have been a huge success, filling top-ranked venues like Orlando’s 18,000-seat Amway Center, the largest auditorium in the city and the home of the Orlando Magic basketball team.

Past Medical Issues

John Mayer has had to postpone concerts in the past due to medical issues. In 2011, Mayer was diagnosed with granuloma, small cysts in his throat, which can be an auto-immune reaction to either a throat infection or foreign matter in the throat. He had surgery to correct the problem in 2011, but was not successful, having further surgeries in 2012. He returned to performing in January 2013.

Alice in Winterland Show postponed

That show has been postponed because the musician will not have recovered sufficiently from his emergency appendectomy.

The show, sponsored by San Francisco radio station Alice @ 97.3, will be rescheduled in January or February.

The station’s website posted the following announcement: “We just got the word from John Mayer’s camp that, unfortunately, his doctors don’t think it is wise for him to play Alice in Winterland.

“John is so disappointed the show can’t happen next Tuesday, but this is not a cancellation—it is a rescheduling. If you have tickets to Alice in Winterland, HOLD ON TO THEM.

“John wants to reschedule for a new date as soon as possible, and we’ll let you know as soon as the new date is confirmed.”

Are you a fan of John Mayer’s solo music? Do you like his performances with Dead and Company?
