3 Dead, Including Shooter, in New Mexico School Shooting

By Bowen Xiao

Two students were killed in a shooting at Aztec High School in Aztec, New Mexico, on Thursday, Dec. 7.

The suspected shooter—who’s identity had not been released as of writing—was also killed, according to the official Twitter account of New Mexico State Police.

Authorities did not release any more details on whether the shooter was a student or employee at the school, or an outsider. Details on how the shooter was killed were also not immediately available.

A statement from state police said that the families of the victims were immediately notified.

An updated Tweet from the department confirmed that no other injuries were reported and that police believe that there are no longer any credible threats to students.

They also said that there was no evidence that other schools in the area were receiving threats.

According to Fox News, the high school was evacuated after being on lockdown for an unspecified amount of time. Authorities also said that they had evacuated the buildings in the school and that students were boarding buses to other locations so they could be with their families.

Earlier reports of the incident said that more than a dozen people were injured in the shooting, but the latest updates clarify that no other injuries were reported.

Both the FBI and State police will be investigating the incident.

Aztec High School sophomore, Garrett Parker, told ABC affiliate KOAT that he heard gunshots.

“I was in history class upstairs and at first it sounded like kids were just banging on the lockers, but it started getting closer and louder and it was obvious it was gunshots. We could hear gunshots from right outside our door.”

Parker told KOAT that he started hiding after they realized it was not a drill.

Thankfully our teacher always locks the door no matter what. So he kept that locked. When they called over the intercom that it was not a drill we went to the corner of the room out of sight from the door and just started hiding” he told the network.

He said he spotted a body when they were later evacuated.

“Right after we got outside the door, right outside the door there was someone lying dead. But I don’t know who it was,” he told KOAT.

More details will be released as the story gets updated.
