Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was killed by a suspected drunk driver, officials said Sunday, Feb. 4. He was 26.
According to the IndyStar, Jackson was killed early this morning. A 54-year-old man who was with Jackson at the time was also killed.
Indiana State Police say Jackson and the man were standing close to a stopped vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 70 when a pickup truck drove onto the shoulder, hitting them both.
State police said that the other man, who was later identified as a ride-sharing driver named Jeffrey Monroe, pulled over to let out a sick passenger.
The driver of the truck, 37-year-old Alex Cabrera Gonsales, attempted to flee the scene of the crash on foot, police said. However, they later caught him near an exit ramp.
Gonsales didn’t have a driver’s license and was intoxicated, officials said.
Police said in a statement: “One of the people struck was thrown into the center lane of I-70. Shortly after the crash, and before any 911 calls were received, Trooper Ty Mays was driving through the area and noticed a vehicle in front of him make an evasive maneuver to the left.
“Mays then spotted the wreckage along the right side of the road and activated his emergency lights. As he slowed to stop for the crash he struck the body of the victim in the center lane.”
It is not yet clear which body he struck.
Jackson played all 16 games in 2016, but he spent the 2017 season on injured reserve. He also played for the Arizona Cardinals before he played for the Colts.
The Colts issued a statement on his death.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of one of our own. Edwin Jackson always brought a smile to our locker room and the community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We will miss him greatly,” the Colts wrote on Twitter.
On social media, players and fans were shared their shock and grief over his death.
