NFL Player Arrested for Alleged Domestic Violence and Illegal Weapons

By Zack Stieber

A football player has been arrested for alleged domestic violence and possession of an assault weapon.

Reuben Foster, a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, was arrested on Sunday morning Feb. 11, after police officers responded to a welfare check and possible disturbance call, according to a statement.

The Los Gatos Monte Sereno Police Department booked Foster on three charges—domestic violence, possession of an assault weapon, and threats.

Foster, 23, was booked into Santa Clary County Main Jail.

The victim is a woman with whom Foster has been in a long-term relationship, according to The Mercury News.

The 49ers said in a statement, “The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the report regarding Reuben Foster. We take matters of this nature seriously and are gathering all pertinent information.”

An NFL spokesman said that the league will look into Foster’s latest arrest.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has the authority to suspend players at least six games for domestic violence allegations.

Foster was previously arrested in January for marijuana possession, reported AL.com.

Foster is one of the NFL players who protested police brutality against black people by taking a knee during the national anthem.

According to MMQB, Foster was not picked until the 31st choice in the first round because teams with higher picks were concerned about Foster due to his “immaturity” and “issues with life skills.”

But the 49ers made an effort to surround him with mentors and support, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I would anticipate people maybe questioning some of his character, but I would tell you his character’s what drew us to him,” general manager John Lynch said after the 49ers selected Foster in the first round on April 27, 2017. “When you start talking football with this young man, he lights up a room, and he’s a good kid. I believe in the kid, and I think it’s going to be—he’s going to be a great player for this organization for a long time.”
