American Luger Emily Sweeney Crashes in Olympics, Taken to Hospital

By Jack Phillips

American Emily Sweeney crashed in her final run at the 2018 Winter Olympics, knocking her out of the competition.

Sweeney was hospitalized after the crash, NBC Olympics reported.

She suffered no broken bones during the crash, and she was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

“I’m okay,” she told reporters.

“I’m very sore, and pretty stiff,” Sweeney added. “I’m going to get an X-ray on my back after this, but I wanted to have the last word. So thanks for all the support, you guys. It’s a bummer, for sure, and I know that I’m better than that. But here we are — it happens.”

Germany’s Natalie Geisenberger won the gold model, while American Erin Hamlin finished in sixth place.

Sweeney, 24, had problems with curves 8 and 9 in the course before she crashed, said USA Luge on Facebook.

“Emily was picked up and brought to the finish building where an initial examination was given by the medical staff,” according to the post, “It was determined that, while feeling bruised and sore, she was OK.”

Sweeney is competing in her first Olympics after missing out on the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Her older sister, Megan Sweeney, is a former Olympic luger.
