Virgin Galactic Passenger Spaceship Successfully Completes First Supersonic Flight

A Virgin Galactic spaceship successfully completed a supersonic flight this week.

The company announced that its passenger spacecraft, Virgin Spaceship Unity, had successfully completed its first supersonic, rocket-powered flight on Thursday, April 5.

The test came three and a half years after an accident destroyed its sister ship during a test flight over California’s Mojave Desert, killing one pilot.

The spaceship, built by the company’s own manufacturing arm, The Spaceship Company, is designed to hold two pilots and six passengers and reach altitudes of 62 miles above Earth, providing a stunning view as well as a few minutes of weightlessness.

Nearly 700 people have signed up for rides, which cost $250,000 each.
