New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that he added an additional $18.5 million to the city’s 2019 fiscal budget in order to cut off MS-13 recruitment and other gang-related activities on Long Island.
The funding will include $16 million to be used for expanding after-school youth programs, case management, and job opportunities to help at-risk youth avoid being pulled into a life of crime.
Some $2.5 million will support the Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative, which helps provide law enforcement agencies and community organizations with resources to fight gun violence and gang-related activities on Long Island.
“New York will not tolerate the monstrous acts and fear that MS-13 has brought to our communities, and by focusing on educating and protecting our young residents, we are furthering our efforts to drive out these violent criminals,” Gov. Cuomo said in a statement.
