More Less
California Coast Glows in the Dark

The waves of Big Sur were lit up by tiny, glowing creatures.

The rare sight was captured in early February by a photographer.

According to KTVU, the creatures responsible for the sight are tiny phytoplankton.

The phenomenon was caused by a bioluminescent phytoplankton bloom. Tiny single-cell organisms called dinoflagellates formed near the surface causing the glowing spectacle.

The organisms are always present in the water but can only be seen under certain conditions.

In this case, calm weather, calm water, and nutrients near the surface enabled the sight.

George Krieger was on hand to take pictures of the rare sight.
