Women spend a lot of time and money on cosmetics and makeup, so it’s important to know how to get the most out of them. These are some tips and tricks that will make your beauty routine easier and cheaper!

If you’re looking good, you’ll feel good too! The beauty industry has a wide variety of products to pamper ourselves with. Over time, we get a hang of what brands suit us best.  Once we’re past this hurdle, it’s worthwhile to understand how to make the most of these products. Besides our beauty favorites, there are tons of make-up products available right now in your kitchen cupboard that are both safe and economical.

Here, we have 20 tricks and tips that will give you that special, professional salon look right from your own home at a fraction of the cost!

1. Use hairspray instead of gel on your eyebrows

Instead of using gel for your eyebrows, this blogger recommends applying some ordinary hairspray. Spray directly onto a special eyebrow comb, or use an old mascara brush. This method will smooth out your eyebrows quickly after using the hair spray.

2. Nail care from your own home

via Visual Hunt

It’s always easiest to maintain a clean, plain look for your nails. Keeping them trimmed and neat makes them look good and can be more hygienic when preparing food. You may give your nails a light buff for that extra healthy sheen.

Coconut oil works wonders for moisturizing your nails.  Rub a thick coating on your nails and leave it on overnight. It also helps soften the cuticles and the skin surrounding the nails.

3. Use lemon for whitening your nails

via MNPO

Frequent use of dark colored nail polish can leave a yellowish tint on your nails. Always use a clear base coat before using colored nail polish to protect nails from discoloration.

To get them looking clean and white again, soak a cotton wool pad in lemon juice, wrap it around your nail, and then cover it with foil. For more details see My Nail Polish Online.

Follow up with the coconut oil treatment above, as lemon juice is acidic and can dry out your nails.

4. Note down the expiry date of your beauty products on the label

Beauty products usually all have a symbol at the back of the label to show how long they will last. The round symbol shown above says the number of months the beauty product can be used after the package is opened. For example, the product above will last for 6 months after it is opened. It’s a good idea to immediately write the expiry date on your product with a permanent marker as soon as you open it. Expired products can actually damage your skin instead of helping it, so this tip could really save your skin!

5. A quick fix for a broken nail

via xojane

Anyone who has long, pretty nails will know how frustrating it is when one of your nails breaks. An ordinary tea bag can be used to fix a broken nail. Remove the tea leaves from the bag, and cut off a piece of the bag to fit your nail. Stick it on the spot where your nail has broken, and trim off any excess that hangs beyond the length of your nail. Now use a nail file to shape it, and then cover with a base coat of nail polish. You may apply a couple of coats for better results.

6. Eye drops to fix dried out mascara

7. How to clean hair straighteners and curlers

To clean your hair straightener or hair curler, mix together some baking soda with hydrogen peroxide, and wipe it along the surface using a soft tissue. Then wipe one more time with a completely dry tissue, as shown here.

9. Use petroleum jelly to avoid dry and cracked lips

In dry weather, particularly in the winter months, your lips soon get dry and chapped. A generous application of petroleum jelly applied to the lips, applied as many times as possible during the day–and preferably left overnight–will mean you never have to worry about dry and cracked lips.

The soothing effect is felt practically instantly, as the moisture in your lips is sealed and prevented from being exposed to the elements. And yes, you still need to drink plenty of water to keep yourself moisturized from the inside out.

To make sure your various compacts like powder, blusher, and eye shadow don’t crack when traveling, place cotton wool pads over the top of them. This will protect them from breaking when you’re on the move. See the instructions here.

12. Create a special plate for washing your brushes

To provide a surface for scrubbing your various makeup brushes, create a special plate for them. Take an ordinary single-use plastic or paper plate, and make random shapes on its surface using a hot glue gun. When the glue has dried, use warm water and shampoo, and rub your brushes against the rough surface of the plate. Continue until the water runs clear. Finally, give them a quick rinse off in clean water.

15. Natural skin moisturizers from the kitchen…even safer to use than bought products!

via Visual Hunt

Coconut oil, cold pressed olive oil and sweet almond oil are some of the best moisturizers you can use on your face and body. With no added synthetic fragrances or toxins, natural oils are some of the safest choices for your skin and for your health. Since coconut oil is light, it gets absorbed very easily into the skin. You may also give yourself a body massage with a generous quantity of oil just before a bath. Your skin will instantly be smoother and more supple!

18. No shampoo hair-care for beautiful, natural hair

via Visual Hunt

This method of a no-shampoo hair wash from Tree Hugger may sound a bit odd initially, but it does work and leaves you with no frizz, smooth and shiny hair. You just need to use baking soda and vinegar and fewer washes may be required per week. The results are truly amazing.

Measure 2 tbsp baking soda into a 500 ml/1 pint glass jar. Wet hair. Fill jar with water and stir to dissolve baking soda. Pour over head and scrub into hair. Rinse. Measure 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar into the same jar. Add water, pour over head, and rinse almost immediately.

This formula is for long hair. For short hair, use a cup of water and 1 tbsp of soda and vinegar.

You may rub in some coconut oil to give you an extra shiny and manageable look after the wash.

19. One great trick for perfect lipstick application

This blogger offers some great tricks for perfect lipstick application. After applying it to your lips, suck your finger for a moment, and pull it out. This will pull out excess lipstick on your finger and it won’t end up on your teeth. Now use highlighter along the contours of your lips to give them a good definition.

20. Above all!

Remember, beauty comes from within. If your general health is good, if you eat good nutritious foods, maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and sleep well…there is no reason why your skin will not glow. Keep negative thoughts and actions away, and your  beauty will radiate from within, making you look oh so beautiful. Look after yourself, girls!
