Only 15 years old, a young lady named Hao Dongdong from Anhui province, China was forced into begging on the streets after her father was injured and their mother abandoned them. Her father became paralyzed after suffering a debilitating injury leaving them with no way to earn an income. Now, she spends her days literally kneeling on all fours on the streets begging with her father. In order to draw more attention from passersby on the busy streets, Dongdong dons a mask depicting a cow’s head.

Dongdong got this idea from a stranger, who said another beggar wore a horse mask to get more attention. As if this were not humiliating enough, the teenager advertises to let people “ride” on her back while she acts like a cow for a fee of 77 cents.

Originally from the countryside, Dongdong and her family came to live in the city in 2000, and planned to set up a small shop. However, her father, 54-year-old Hao Xinli, got into an altercation with some sales staff personnel that resulted in injuries to his body, causing permanent paralysis. Then in June 2015, his wife took off and has not been heard from since.

“Wearing horse and cow masks is just for getting people’s attention,” she said.

Being the eldest of three children, Dongdong dropped out of school in order to take care of the family. Having no proper form of ID, she was unable to find a job and was forced to beg on the streets. When at first she was unable to pay the bills, she got the suggestion to start wearing the cow mask in order to attract more attention.

“I know about the father with the horse head mask”, she said. “Wearing horse and cow masks is just for getting people’s attention.” The father who begs on the street wearing a horse mask resorted to begging in order to pay for his son’s cancer treatment.

Originally, officials labelled Dongdong as a fraudster. She was eventually able to produce photos to support her story; and she also started to bring her father along with her—in order to gain sympathy, as well as to demonstrate her situation as legitimate.

It has been a tough time for Dongdong and her family thus far. When it rains, she is unable to beg or earn anything. On top of this, there is the sheer humiliation of spending each and every day begging on all fours on the crowded streets, not to mention the forms of abuse, and additional humiliation from passersby calling her a swindler.  On one occasion, she was slapped in the face by a drunk and another time she was offered a job as an escort.

Dongdong told media that she would like to earn around $800 in order to send her brothers and sisters to school.

Dongdong’s story is one of devotion and heartbreaking sacrifice. While there are many difficulties facing people in modern China, it is truly heartening to see the bonds of honor and family are still alive in the hearts of the people who live there. We wish them well and hope those inner characteristics are long preserved.
