Wall Street has a powerful statue of a charging bull masterfully crafted in bronze—a symbol of New York City’ financial industry. Now, just in time for Women’s Day, a new statue stands…a small girl boldly faces the charging bull.
“The fearless girl” as she has been named, has an air of fearlessness and confidence about her. She is both feminine and strong, with her flowing dress and bold stance. “Fearless Girl” seems to embody David from the story of David and Goliath—facing the giant of the financial industry, it seems like she will definitely lose. But when we see her pure faith and purity facing the bull with no fear, suddenly it seems like she is already the winner.
At her feet there’s a plaque with an inscription that reads,”Know the power of women in leadership.”

State Street Global Advisors used this as a part of a campaign to get more women in positions of power at companies, specifically as board members. It targets gender diversity in the workplace as well as equal work opportunities.
In a short and powerful video one feels moved by the message it sends out.
When Lori Heinel, deputy global chief investment officer spoke to Business Insider, she said the idea of having a female stand up to the bull just struck her as a very clever but also creative and engaging way to make that statement. She said, “Even though it’s a little girl, her stance is one of determination, forwardness and being willing to challenge and take on the status quo.”

To have women in positions of power can also bring a more caring atmosphere that can sometimes be absent in male-dominated workplaces. We can already see the positive effect this small statue is making for young girls—what a brave and lovely role model!
