Girl meets her blind great-grandma for the first time—what she does next ‘brings her back to life’

This young girl’s parents expected her to feel nervous about meeting her great-grandmother with dementia for the first time. However, the opposite happened—not only was she not nervous, she sang sweetly to her nana, and, almost magically, brought her “back to life.”

In 2015, Sophie Flynn, a 5-year-old from County Offlay in Ireland, was taken by her parents, Sarah Miller and William Flynn, to Norwich to meet her 82-year-old great-grandmother, Brenda Brock, for the first time. Her parents thought Sophie would be frightened to see Brock, who has advanced dementia and is also blind. But the meeting surprised them.

Recounting the occasion to Mirror, Miller said, “Sophie just jumped straight into bed with nana and started chatting to her and singing to her.”

The little girl stroked her nana’s chin tenderly and sang sweetly to her. Great-grandma Brock, who is not very responsive, miraculously started stirring and even speaking upon hearing the beautiful melody from such a young and innocent child.

Each time they were together, she would sing “You Are My Sunshine,” which is a song that holds a special place in their family’s hearts.

“Sophie brought her back to life,” said Miller. “It was amazing, we just couldn’t believe it. When they were together it was like they were the only two people in the room.”

Now, at the age of 8, Sophie continues the tradition of singing to her nana, each time finishing with a kiss.

“Nana isn’t very responsive, she doesn’t know who I am or who my mom Yvonne, her daughter, is most of the time. She only remembers her husband Joe and he is the only one she talks to but straight away she started engaging with Sophie.

“Nana is very scared of new people but she was completely at ease with Sophie. She kept asking for Sophie for the two days we stayed in Norwich.”

The heartwarming moment was captured on video and uploaded to social media by Sophie’s grandpa, Sandy Miller, and it soon went viral. The post has since been viewed over 5 million times on Facebook, and has been shared over 100,000 times.

Meanwhile, thousands of netizens comment how Sophie has touched them through her kindness and compassion.

“I’ve had messages from people all over the world telling me Sophie has touched their hearts and it has given them hope for their own relatives with dementia,” said Sarah. “It’s been overwhelming but I am so pleased it is helping others.”
