This artist transforms old metal scrap into a GIGANTIC turtle sculpture

Some artists use unique and unusual materials to create amazing pieces of art. This artist from Indonesia fits the description.

Ono Gaf, in his 60s, has been creating large-sized sculptures with thousands of pieces of metal scraps taken from vehicles, bikes, and machines. Out of the many artworks that he has created, this sculpture of a gigantic turtle truly stands out, according to the Visual News.

Living in a tiny kampong with his wife, he had held at least 11 exhibitions for his art pieces.

He told The Jakarta Post that he had initially encountered difficulties when he chose to use metal instead of wood as it “lasts.” He said that some people did not see the sculptures as an art because he uses metal. Fortunately, a Dutch doctor wanted “to encourage him,” and paid him ten times the price for one of his works.

He also told the paper what according to him constitutes a great artist.

“I couldn’t afford to travel, but I could see the world through books…I knew I had to learn. Books can’t make you rich but they can make you clever. Artists need to be intellectuals. Only then can art be great…I believe in art and I believe in myself…The life of an artist is up and down,” he said.

“I’ve never sought profit. Sometimes I give works away because I know I get blessings in return…Looking back I feel satisfied with what I’ve done, but I’m still learning. As an artist, I should be honest and holy, not arrogant. To be creative is to be spiritual, to work hard and concentrate on God,” he added.
