4-year-old boy with no legs ‘walks’ for first time—but what he tells mom later, makes her cry

A mom and dad in Texas have been waiting for the day that their limbless son could finally walk on his own. When this day arrived and the mom asked him if he’s proud of himself, his four-word reply left her in tears.

On Nov. 19, Katie Whiddon, 23, was crying when her 4-year-old son, Camden, born without arms and legs, could finally walk by himself.

“We started crying, we were so proud,” Katie told PEOPLE. “I didn’t know when that day would come. I didn’t think he was ready for it yet and I was just so shocked and happy. It was so exciting and [his sister] Ryleigh was over there jumping, excited.”

In a video, Camden is seen walking and joyfully telling his father, Cole Greene, “I’m coming to you. I’m walking!” while his younger sister, Ryleigh, looked on.

“With some coaching and pep talk from his Daddy, CAMDEN FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO WALK! I cried like a baby! I’ve been looking forward to this moment for the past 4 years and it finally happened!” the video caption read.

When she asked her little son if he is proud of himself, he replied, “No, I’m just walking.”

When Katie was 18 weeks pregnant and went for an ultrasound, doctors diagnosed her unborn child with an extremely rare birth defect known as amelia-phocomelia and told her that her baby didn’t have any arms or legs.

“When I first found out he wouldn’t have arms or legs, I thought that he would just be a vegetable … I didn’t know what to expect,” she told PEOPLE. “I had just turned 19 and I didn’t know, ‘Am I gonna be able to be good enough for him?’

“When he was around 2 months old, I had him laying on my bed … I saw him out the corner of my eye and he was hitting the toys with his arms. I started to cry, I was just so happy and that confirmed that he was gonna be able to do things.”

Seeing Camden growing up well, Katie said, “I had so many doubts at first, but he’s just shown me how I don’t need to doubt him.”

Katie also has high hopes for Camden. She said, “Call it mother’s intuition, but I feel like he’s gonna be one of those motivational speakers and now, giving him the exposure will give him a platform so when he’s ready to speak for himself he will have people who actually want to listen to him and care about what he has to say.”
