Mom in labor shoots newborn coming into the world from rare vantage point—from where she’s lying

When a mother, who’s a photographer by trade, gave birth to her second child, she decided to capture the delivery process herself. With help from her husband and friends, she managed to photograph her baby coming into the world from the rare vantage point of a woman in labor.

Lauren Chenault, 25, a photographer from New York, had been hoping to shoot her first child’s birth two years ago. But since she had to hold her legs back while giving birth, she was unable to hold the camera as she had planned. So when she was going to deliver her second child, she had everything well prepared.

“I wanted to photograph my own birth…” she said. “I’m able to grow a human inside me and push it out, so I wanted to document it.”

She asked her friends to hold her legs back for her so she could hold her camera and capture the incredible moment of her son’s birth.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of my husband and my friends, Wendy, Lauren, Megan and Becca, who were there with me, they helped to hold my legs back, so that I would be able to hold my camera,” she said. “I had one of my friends who told me to get my camera ready because he was coming, so I was able to get it ready.”

As Chenault was pushing her child out with all her effort, she also held the camera on her stomach and kept pressing the button at the same time, hoping to capture the perfect shot.

“It was amazing capturing them,” she added. “I wasn’t even looking at what I was doing with the camera, I just kept snapping, hoping that I got it.”

The baby boy, Kai Arthur, was delivered on Jan. 31, 2017, weighing 8 pounds, 3 ounces (approx. 4 kg).

The photos Lauren uploaded to the internet went viral. “A bunch of people said they would have rather witnessed the moment without a camera,” the photographer and stay-at-home mom said, “but I got to witness it with both.”

“Looking back at it, I see an amazing image of my son that I’ll have forever,” she added. “As a photographer, I love being able to credit myself for my own work. And this is one that I’m so proud of—to call my own.”
