Soldiers see things during wartime that ordinary people cannot imagine. In this photo series, one observes the expressions on these soldier’s faces, before, during, and after the war. They speak to our hearts without words.
In Lalange Snow’s photo series “We Are The Not Dead”, she decided to portray 14 British soldiers’ faces over a period of seven months. The photos were taken before, during, and after their operational deployment to Afghanistan.
The photographer’s purpose was to show how these peoples’ faces started changing. To be a soldier, men and women must learn how to not only be brave but how to be cruel as well. Oftentimes, a person on active duty is required to detach emotionally.
Lalange’s intention was not only to honor the soldiers’ courage but to also make the public aware of the psychological and emotional changes every soldier goes through.
