After 17 years of being an amazing stepfather, it was about time Mark received something really impressive for Father’s Day. In fact it blew him away! The heartwarming moment was caught on camera and it’s something you won’t want to miss.
Lindsey Collins met Mark Hight 17 years ago when he came to take her mom out on a date; she was just a 9-year-old kid then. Instead of being hostile about her mom’s new relationship, Lindsey and Mark quickly became close. Before long, Mark became a father figure for Lindsey, and their connection improved every time he visited.
Over time, their relationship improved and deepened.
“He would take me to the mall to buy a rare Pokemon card, then go on a date with my mom. I was always so included,” Lindsey told TODAY.
On the other hand, Mark described his feelings for her, saying, “I always treated her like she was my daughter. In my mind, I would adopt her in a heartbeat.”
“He was honestly the best father growing up,” Lindsey told 1010 WINS. “In my pre-teen and teen years, I was given a lot of freedom as long as I didn’t do anything to break my parents’ trust. I think that made our relationship stronger, because I never felt like he or my mom were overbearing. In return, it sort of created this open door policy where I knew I could go to him with any situation without fear of judgment or getting into trouble.”
Over those 17 years as a family, Lindsey and Mark talked a few times about her being adopted, but it never came to fruition. So this year, on Father’s Day, Lindsey decided to give Mark a special gift—she wanted to ask him to adopt her.
“It is never too late. If anything ever happened to my mom, their marriage is the only thing that signifies that we’re connected. I wanted to be his daughter,” Lindsey said.
Mark’s reaction to receiving the adoption papers as his Father’s Day gift, is priceless. He was so touched by her gesture that he cried and was honestly surprised.
“I was totally surprised. I lost it, because I always wanted to be her father,” he said.
Lindsey, too, didn’t expect Mark to react that way. “My stepdad is a tough construction worker and I’ve never seen him cry this hard. It was such a special moment and I’m glad it was caught on camera,” she said.
On the decision to give adoption papers to her dad, Lindsey said, “He’s genuinely one of my best friends and has done so much for our family. I feel like I should’ve asked him to adopt me years ago, but the saying is better late than never, right?”
