A 7-hour long painful operation on this Mumbai teenager did not stop him from putting on a happy face after it! This teenage boy suffered from a complex odontoma that develops arrangements of unusual teeth-like growths. This teen entered the hospital with a huge bulge on his face and then the doctors removed 232 teeth from his mouth!
Ashik Gavai, 17, went through a surgery in Mumbai’s JJ hospital back in 2014. He had a condition called as ‘Odontoma’ that usually strikes teens post milk teeth period. His abnormal molar measured around 3.5X2 cm. The dentists thought of it as a normal surgery but once they began operating, his jawbone had a number of tiny dot like teeth within.
The teen’s father initially feared that the swelling would be cancerous but the doctors successfully removed all the extra teeth. Once removed, there is no fear as they do not regrow.
After the tiny teeth were plucked, they found a gigantic ‘marble-like’ structure that the doctors struggled to break down. The doctors resorted to the oldest method of fragmenting the huge piece without affecting the healthier teeth around, that is by ‘Chisel mallet’ procedure.
Once this tedious operation was done, Ashik flaunted a tiring smile on his face. It is truly amazing to see his willpower!
This complex odontoma is a developmental anomaly that affects the molar at its formation stage. However, in this case, the surgeons restored Ashik’s jawbone structure without any deformities and they promised the family a quick recovery.
