While many nursery rhymes are silly and meant to be giggle-inducing, some little ditties have meanings that are quite sad. To us, the “Five Little Ducks” song is adorable, but this precious 4-year-old can’t handle what happens to the ducks in this tune.
Riley, after learning the rhyme at preschool, sat down to dinner and happily performed it for her family. She starts out quite confident and excited, but quickly becomes tearful when she realizes that the ducklings are disappearing as the story unfolds.
At the beginning, Riley sings, “Five little ducks went out to play, over the hills and far away” with a huge smile. Her mom Jessica Carey, who was filming the video, cheers her on throughout. As the rhyme continues, and fewer ducklings come back to the mama duck when she quacks to call for them, what’s occurring starts sinking in with Riley.
Riley’s eyes fill with tears when she recites the final line, “No little ducks came back,” and she sobs to her mother, covering her face. Jessica assures her, “All her ducks same back Riley.” But it’s too late; Riley’s a ball of sadness.
With close to 3 million views on Facebook, many parents are commenting on the video, and Riley’s parents are hoping Ellen DeGeneres will take notice.
