International Olympic Committee decides not to decide between LA and Paris for 2024 Olympics

Paris and Los Angeles will be hosting the 2024 and 2028 Olympics, but only if the two host nations can decide who goes first.

Trump recently tweeted “Working hard to get the Olympics for the United States (L.A.). Stay tuned!”

At this stage of the opening talks, Paris is widely seen as the favorite for 2024.

Members from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted unanimously on the deal that both countries are happy with.

If the deal fails to pass, however, only the 2024 hosting rights will be voted on when IOC meets on Sept. 13 in Lima, Peru.

But an agreement is most likely to happen as the two mayors, Eric Garcetti of LA and Anne Hidalgo of Paris, made a surprise joint appearance before the Session to thank IOC Members seconds after the decision was announced, described the IOC in a press release.

“Both of us will find it more and more difficult to convince cities—whether it’s Paris, Los Angeles, or other American cities—to really go into this process if one of us gets turned down,” Garcetti said earlier on Tuesday, according to AP.

IOC President Thomas Bach said the good news of the decision actually briefly stunned him into silence.

“With Los Angeles and Paris, there are two fantastic cities from countries with a profound Olympic history,” Bach said.

IOC heard both cities present their 2024 hosting plans at a conference center in Olympics capital city, Lausanne.

In a closed-door session with IOC members, both cities outlined their plans for hosting the 2024 Olympics.

“We look forward to working together, maybe not in competition but collaboration with Paris,” LA’s Garcetti said.

“In Olympic history there’s only been 37 times in which there has been a tie for a gold medal. Maybe today is the 38th,” said Garcetti.

The two mayors have a strong friendship. Hidalgo said her friendship with Garcetti was a potential “key element” of the deal.

“I am fully committed with the Paris team to putting all my energy, our creativity and my resolve into reaching an agreement for Paris to experience once again this Olympic adventure that it has been longing for for 100 years,” Mayor Hidalgo said.

The dual award is a big win for the IOC’s future stability too since the two world-class cities offer financially secure bids.

After many years of overspending by different Olympic hosts, LA says it plan to use only existing venues for the games.
