Fox Sports Reporter in Hospital After Baseball Fractures Her Eye Socket

By Colin Fredericson

A Fox Sports reporter for Atlanta Braves games was hit by a baseball while reporting on the game from the press area.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera hit a foul ball that connected with Kelsey Wingert’s eye and fractured the socket, in the seventh inning of a March 30 game, according to 11 Alive. She and others tweeted updates on her progress at the hospital.

“I’m okay. At ER waiting on results of CAT scan. Thanks for well wishes,” Wingert. wrote on Twitter.

All 30 Major League Baseball teams expanded safety netting this season to protect fans, ESPN reported. Video footage of the game, obtained by Yahoo, shows the dugout area Wingert and other photographers were in, just past the players’ dugout, is uncovered. Another member of the press can briefly be seen assisting Wingert in the video clip.

A reporter for the Atlanta Falcons, also named Kelsey, tweeted a photo of Wingert with a black eye, holding a bag of jellybeans.

“There’s nothing that @Starburst jellybeans can’t fix right? My rockstar friend @KelsWingert is back home and doing well after getting hit in the eye on a foul ball last night working the @Braves game! Talk about a warrior!” tweeted Kelsey Conway.

Fox Sports South sent out a notice on Twitter suggesting Wingert would be taking some time off to recover from the fracture.

“Last evening our reporter Kelsey Wingert was hit by a foul ball during the 7th inning of the Phillies-Braves game at SunTrust Park. She was briefly hospitalized and diagnosed with a fractured eye socket.” Fox Sports South stated. “Today she is resting comfortably and expected to make a full recovery in the near future. We wish Kelsey the absolute best and look forward to having her back in the rotation very soon.”

The Atlanta Braves replied to Wingert’s tweet with get-well wishes.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing you back at the ballpark soon!” a team representative wrote via Twitter.
