Physicists at Yale University have found signs of a newly discovered and relatively little-understood type of crystal in a surprisingly common place.
The University discovered hints of a time crystal within the type of crystal commonly included in children’s toys. Time crystals have atoms that spin and flip at regular intervals when exposed to a pulsating force.
Monoammonium phosphate crystals are commonly found in children’s crystal growing kits. Scientists discovered that within this type of crystal, time crystals can form. Scientists still don’t completely understand why they form.
Regular crystals have a stable arrangement of ordered atoms, but time crystals maintain a regular tick as their atoms move and spin.
