‘Secret Garden’ of Bamboo Coral Found in Gulf of Mexico

A stunning “secret garden” of bamboo coral has been found in the Gulf of Mexico thousands of feet below the surface.

Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration made the discovery using a remote-operated submersible, reported Business Insider.

“This is a truly magnificent garden of coral fans, I don’t think we’ve seen these densities yet in the Gulf of Mexico,” one of the expedition’s scientists said.

The garden of corals is located at a depth of more than 7,500 feet.

Scientists said a number of factors are necessary for such life to exist, including the correct underlying geology and access to the current so corals can feed regularly.

Scientists with the federal agency said that the reef could be around 1,000 years old.
