Hurricane Bud Strengthens to Category 3: Here Is Where It’s Heading

By Jack Phillips

Hurricane Bud is again a Category 3 storm as it churns off Mexico’s Pacific coast, eyeing landfall in Baja California.

Earlier, according to forecasters, the storm had strengthened to become a Category 4 storm but weakened.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Bud had maximum sustained winds of 125 mph and was located 325 miles from the coast of Cabo San Lucas in Baja, CBS News reported. The agency said that the storm is 225 miles southwest of Cabo Corrientes, near Puerto Vallarta.

“Further weakening, possibly rapid at times, is expected during the next 48 hours, and Bud is forecast to weaken below hurricane intensity by Wednesday night,” the center said in an update.

The storm is moving to the northwest at 6 mph and is slated to approach Baja California Sur on Thursday as a tropical storm rather than a hurricane. A rainfall forecast of 3 to 6 inches in some places in Mexico is forecast.

“These rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides,” the NHC said.

The center said that the storm’s core still could generate dangerous heavy surf as well as rip currents over the coming days in Mexico, Fox News reported. “These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions,” the NHC added.
