Rabbi tells daughter nobody attending lonely lady’s funeral, then 30 strangers suddenly shows up

Compassion is something we all need, and these total strangers had plenty to share when it counted. When this elderly lady died at age 83 years, she was alone and had no-one to mourn her. However, that changed with a bit of help from total strangers.

Francine Stein from Rockland County, New York, passed away with no immediate living family members. Rabbi Elchanan Weinbach felt sad that he was to officiate at her funeral, with no-one to say a final goodbye to her. “The funeral director said, ‘This is the easiest funeral you’re ever going to do,’” Weinbach told WLTX. “The idea of a woman dying alone, as I thought about it, it went from being the easiest funeral to a very difficult one,” he said. “It just seemed so sad.”

Weinbach mentioned it to his daughter Ora Weinbach, who promised to make sure there was at least one person at the funeral, as she was touched as well. So she wrote on social media, asking for someone to come to the funeral.

What happened on the day stunned both Ora and Weinbach—thirty total strangers showed up to give Stein a send-off.

“People are actually willing to help out,” said Ora, according to the Huffington Post. “It’s just beautiful that there are people out there that are willing to give up their own time and come together and be there for somebody.”

Strangers took up the position as pallbearers; some even shoveled dirt onto the coffin as Stein was finally laid to rest.

Mindy Liebman, one of the people who attended the traditional Jewish ceremony, said: “To me it’s mind-blowing that a person can live an entire life and die and have nobody there who cares that they died. It’s important to celebrate her life, to celebrate the fact that she even lived.”

Thank you to the total strangers who showed love and care for Stein as she ended her journey on earth—you are all amazing.
