9/11: Hollywood actor Steve Buscemi becomes firefighter for the week following terrorist attacks

Stories of heroes rescuing people from the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, are many. Here’s an account of Steve Buscemi, who was a firefighter in his earlier days. A day after the attack, he rushed back to the Fire Department to assume his previous role, eager to help out in whatever way he could.

Most people would know Steve Buscemi as a Hollywood film director and actor, who played in Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, a crime thriller, but do you know that he was once a firefighter?

Buscemi was actually a New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighter with Engine Co. 55 in Little Italy, Manhattan, in the 1980s, for four years after he took an FDNY civil service test at age 18. He later left his job and became an actor.

But, the day after the Sept. 11 attack, he turned up at his previous post and tirelessly worked 12-hour shifts over the next week, helping firefighters search for missing bodies.

In 2013, over a decade after the attack, the Brotherhood of Fire shared the story of Buscemi, selflessly getting involved in the search operation.

The post read: “On September 12, 2001 and for several days following Brother Steve worked 12-hour shifts alongside other firefighters digging and sifting through the rubble from the World Trade Center looking for survivors.”

“Very few photographs and no interviews exist because he declined them. He wasn’t there for the publicity.”

When Buscemi was asked to comment, he said: “It was a privilege to be able to do it. It was great to connect with the firehouse I used to work with and with some of the guys I worked alongside. And it was enormously helpful for me because while I was working, I didn’t really think about it as much, feel it as much.”

Buscemi is currently on the Board of Advisors for Friends of Firefighters, the Independent reported.
