Baby chimp scared after losing mom to poachers. But after rescue finds a new mom in shelter dog

Rudy the baby chimp had a brutal life ahead of him, being captured by animal traffickers. However, the intervention of an animal care group not only helped him start a new life but also brought him in close contact with a very loving dog who would soon become his dear friend.

When Rudy was just a few months old, he was caught and traded by traffickers. His family was killed for bushmeat.

And though he was not up for death, the traffickers were very interested in selling him off as a pet to high-value customers. An expatriate had gotten hold of him in Liberia and was in the process of sending him out of the country.

Fortunately, the Liberia Forestry Development Agency intervened at the right moment and arrested the trafficker, rescuing Rudy from his clutches.

But the baby chimp was too weak, suffering from malnourishment. He had also gone pale and was not as active as a chimp his age should be. Rudy was taken to the Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue sanctuary (LCR).

It was at the sanctuary that Rudy came into contact with Princess, the dog who acts as the unofficial caretaker of the place. And Princess is not just any dog. She is very loving and caring, always ready to make the chimps in the sanctuary feel at home.

“She completely adjusts her role depending on the size, age, personality, needs of each new foster family member.

“Princess truly helps the chimpanzee orphans feel safe, secure and loved. She adds immensely to the feeling of family they inherit when they come into our home,” Jenny Desmond, the founder of the LCR, told The Dodo.

And after being abused, Princess was the perfect friend and caretaker that Rudy could hope for. She played with the chimp, cuddled him, and showered him with kisses.

Chimps that grow up in traumatic conditions often have a hard time readjusting to normal lives. But Princess’s presence ensured that Rudy could now forget about his terrible past.

And as the days went by, Rudy gradually recovered, both physically and psychologically. As a result, Rudy has begun socializing with other older chimps at the camp.

Rudy and Princess’s relationship is definitely a unique one and something that teaches us that love is truly capable of healing scars of the past.
