It is difficult to get around and operate properly when one’s car breaks down in rural Texas. A former pastor can appreciate this fact, and decided to set up a non-profit garage to offer free auto services to women in need.
In 2010, Chris Williams, then a pastor in Texas, was driving home from church when he saw a mother and her son from his congregation walking along the highway. Concerned, he stopped to offer them a ride.
Happy Birthday to GG’s founder Chris Williams. Thank you for your heart to serve others!
“She had been walking to church every Sunday and Wednesday,” Williams told KTRK. “She had been walking to work. She was hitchhiking, which was not safe.”
Their car was “in the shop for months and they couldn’t afford to get it out,” Williams told PEOPLE.
“Right then, I decided that I needed to figure out a way to get my dream of opening a free garage off the ground.”
His aim was to help single mothers and widows because he heard stories of them being taken advantage of by some car dealers.
“Sadly there are people who will prey upon just about anyone,” he said. “Also, car repairs are so expensive, and where I live, it’s rural. So if you don’t have a car, you can’t get a job. And if you don’t have a job, you can’t buy a car. It’s a cruel dilemma to be in.”
What a great night at God's Garage! Fellowship, food, and a lot of fun. We were able to bless a single mom on her birthday with a bunch of repairs to her car to make it safe and reliable!
With a great group of volunteers to help, Williams has been repairing and giving away cars for free.
“There’s no greater joy than seeing a mom finally be able to start her car up and drive it home,” Harvey Yaw, a volunteer at the garage, said.
Toni is one of the most patient ladies around. She has been on our waiting list for quite sometime. We were able to…
“And when people donate their old cars and we fix them up and give them away, there’s a feeling that’s unbelievable. The people are so grateful—their emotion always brings tears of happiness.”
Shelby Grimet, a single mother who has benefited from Williams’s garage, is so grateful for being given a renovated car so that she could get a job and turn her life around.
“Every day, they’re changing people’s lives,” she said. “They’ve certainly changed mine.”
What an inspiring group of people!
