How often do you get a haircut? Every few months or so? For one woman, she refused to cut her hair for two decades, and even ignored her sister’s constant pleas to get a haircut!
Sue Walker had grown her hair for 22 years without getting it cut. By 1999, Sue’s hair was so long that it was almost touching the ground, especially so as Sue is only 5 feet 4 inches. Her sister, Bebe, begged her to get a haircut for two decades—she finally relented.
Having convinced Sue, Bebe wrote to Oprah Winfrey to ask her to give Sue a much-needed makeover.
Bebe wrote: “I need your help! Enclosed is a picture of my 42-year-old sister, who has hair now down to her ankles. She never wears it down because it gives her headaches. She always wears it up in a bun, which makes her look 15 years older.”
Oprah accepted the request and got Sue on The Oprah Winfrey Show for her makeover.
In a video of the makeover, which took place in 1999, Oprah first introduces Sue to the audience.
“Sue hasn’t cut her hair since Farah Fawcett was a Charlie’s Angel 22 years ago,” says Oprah. “It’s true! Sue’s hair measures 56 inches long.”
Oprah also explained that it was nothing for most people when they get a haircut. But for Sue, having grown her hair for 22 years—she became very attached to it, and she considered her hair as an important part of her, of her identity and security. To cut it is “a big deal” for her, Oprah explains.
So, when Sue arrived for the makeover, her husband accompanied her, and was ready to witness her getting the first snip in 22 years!
After the beauty experts worked their magic on Sue, she walked out of the show with a hairstyle she probably wouldn’t have imagined herself with, even her glasses were gone! She looked totally different, so much so that Bebe was moved to tears when she saw her sister’s fresh new look.
As for the huge chunk of hair, Sue decided to donate it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that uses donated hair to make wigs for children who suffer from long-term medical hair loss.
It’s amazing how a haircut can really change the way someone looks.
