Crying mom thinks everyone believes she’s crazy—but a note on takeaway bag proves otherwise

A mom in Georgia was crying while walking out of a restaurant, and was “sure the other customers and employees thought I was crazy.” But when she glanced at her takeaway bag, she was surprised to see an encouraging note tacked to it.

In April 2017, Jamie Mathews Heustess and her husband, Chris, took their son, Ian, to Cracker Barrel in Pooler for dinner. But the dinner didn’t go as planned because Ian, who has autism, was having a meltdown.

Heustess’s husband decided to take Ian home while she ordered takeaway.

When Heustess was alone, a waitress came over to ask if she would be ordering.

“This was probably her 5th or 6th time stopping by the table … I said yes, a to go order, just for me,” Heustess recalled on her Facebook page.

Instead of just taking Heustess’s order, the waitress asked if her family wanted anything.

“She asked if my husband or son wanted anything and I said no, my husband took our son home to reduce stimuli around him,” Heustess said.

She went on to tell the waitress about Ian’s condition and that he had a long day.

“By this time I was crying and having a moment, not because I was embarrassed that my son is autistic, but because he is a good kid and I didn’t want anyone to think he was just a spoiled kid being a brat,” Heustess recalled.

Despite Heustess’s own “meltdown,” the waitress was “gracious and sweet.”

She told Heustess that “it was not a problem” and she would process the order quickly.

After the waitress left, Heustess wrote on her Facebook page about the “realities of autism that you never quite know until you experience it.”

When her order arrived 15 minutes later, the waitress told Heustess that her dinner “had been taken care of,” and there is “no need for payment.”

“I started crying all over,” Heustess said.

Heustess wanted to make sure she heard it correctly and asked the waitress again.

The sweet gesture had Heustess crying while walking out of the restaurant. She thought everyone must be thinking she’s crazy.

Then suddenly she saw a piece of paper stapled on her takeaway order.

The note read, “Your child is amazing mommy. Be strong, keep your head up. You are doing a great job. Have a great night. Your server, Kailyn.”

Heustess felt thankful to receive the words of encouragement from the waitress and shared her experience on Facebook.

Her post was shared extensively and Kailyn was soon notified about Heustess’s story.

“God bless you and your amazing family . Y’all made my night . I know being a mommy can be hard at times but you did what you needed to do for your child and I thank you for that you are an amazing mother keep pushing forward. He is beautiful and amazing and is lucky to have to you as a mother,” Kailyn wrote.

She added that she was just trying to encourage Heustess.

“Thank you everyone so much didn’t expect for this to become this big. I was just trying to give a few words of encouragement from a mommy to a mommy. God bless each and everyone [sic] of you. And again thank you all so much y’all are the best,” she wrote.
