Mom goes into preterm labor at home. Panicked to see baby’s face blue, begs him to hold on

When baby Lawrence was born at 22 weeks, it was extremely doubtful whether he would survive, given that he weighed just over a pound. But as they say, the world is full of miracles!

Chastity, 20, from Sacramento was awaiting the birth of her first baby boy. The child was due on Sept. 7, and she was busy making plans to welcome him.

But baby Lawrence, aka Little Leni, had his own plans. Out of the blue, Chastity went into labor on May 9 while at home, when no one was around to support her. At the time, she was just 22 weeks into her pregnancy.

Chastity clenched her teeth and got through the delivery, but was later horrified upon seeing her child.

“I didn’t even know I was in labor at first.

“He wasn’t a regular baby. He was blue and purple. I didn’t think he was going to live, and I’m looking at my son like, ‘Oh my God, please live. Don’t die on me,’” she told KCRA.

Fortunately for Chastity and Leni, firefighters had responded to her call in time and were at her house shortly after the delivery. They tried to resuscitate the child and arranged for him to be sent to the nearest hospital.

The baby, which weighed just over a pound (approx. 454 grams) at birth, was wrapped in medical foil throughout the journey to ensure that he remained warm. And once at the hospital, he was immediately taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The doctors were not sure whether he would survive his first week at the hospital. But they conducted numerous surgeries to improve his chances of survival.

And as the weeks passed, it became obvious that Leni was a fighter and had no intention of leaving this world without experiencing it to the fullest.

“There are a lot of children this age who would not survive, particularly in the circumstances of an emergency home delivery.

“He’s going out into the world with lots of support, and he’s lucky to be going out to it at all,” said Dr. Paul Walsh, pediatrician at the hospital.

Leni, a week after his actual due date, weighed just over 6 pounds (approx. 3 kg) and is growing well, much to the delight of his mother, Chastity.

And considering that all odds were against him, Leni’s survival and growth are nothing short of a miracle.
