Mom feels home is empty when son’s off to college—then she finds ‘surprises’ hidden everywhere

When one mother’s son went to college, she really missed him. The house seemed unbearably empty in her son’s absence. However, by semester two, the young man came up with a thoughtful way to comfort his mom.

It was the second semester of college for Cheryl Gottlieb Boxer’s son. After she returned home, she realized it was not any easier than the first semester. She shared her feelings in a Facebook post, but what’s more, she shared the big surprises her son left her at home.

“Today we dropped our son off at the train station to return to college for the spring semester of his freshman year,” Cheryl shared on the Facebook page Grown and Flown. “I returned home and found the house too quiet. I missed his chatter, his guitar music and video games. Every corner of the house felt barren in his absence.”

The absence of children from home may be hard for parents to cope with at first. No matter how long they’ve been away for, it’s generally difficult for both mom and dad.

One person responded to Cheryl’s post by writing: “Reading this my eyes welled up with tears. Mine left yesterday but it is his 2nd year and it hasn’t really gotten any easier.”

But luckily, Cheryl soon found comfort at home—in fact, everywhere at home!

“And then I started finding notes,” Cheryl continues. “Everywhere.”

Cheryl’s lovely son left his mom so many notes that every spot at home was a new surprise. He left a note reading, “Have a nice bath,” on the edge of the bathtub.

“You look beautiful,” on the mirror of his mom’s medicine cabinet.

“I love you,” inside her coffee maker.

All these notes made his mom feel like digging for treasure at home. She wrote: “Finding these notes has made me so happy. And I keep finding more. Each note I find I’m afraid is the last, but then I find another.”

When she asked her son why he left so many notes, his reply amazed her.

She wrote, “he told me because he doesn’t want me to forget him.”

“As if that’s possible,” she writes.

Of course, as you can guess, Cheryl also left a note for her son in his dinner package.

Many people were impressed by the son’s thoughtfulness, and connected with the message left on the post

“That is totally awesome! You have raised a very loving & compassionate boy. That’s the problem with today’s world,” one wrote. “You should be one very proud momma.”

“Children often become what was modeled for them,” another wrote. “You raised a thoughtful, kind-hearted son. Good job, mom.”

A middle-aged woman shared her own story when she studied in college. “I once left an ‘I love you’ note taped to my mom’s bathroom mirror when I went back to college after break,” she wrote. “It’s still there 27 years later.”
